The Lake

An original atmospheric acrylic landscape painting inspired by the lakes and mountain landscapes of North Wales, and by the landscape at the heart of my writing.

This small painting grew from an attempt to work with a little less certainty, allowing the lake, distant hills, shifting light and reflections to emerge rather than trying to describe every detail. Layers of muted blues, greens, greys and earthy tones create a quiet, slightly dreamlike landscape, with a small boat providing a solitary point of focus on the water.

The painting is connected to Abyssus, the book I am currently writing around a day beside a lake, and to my wider exploration of attention, landscape and what becomes visible when we allow ourselves to look without immediately trying to explain.

The surface retains visible brush marks and glimpses of the canvas beneath the paint rather than being worked to a highly polished finish. These are part of the character of the painting and its atmospheric quality.

The painting is presented in a distinctive vintage hammered silver-coloured frame, carefully chosen to complement the muted tones of the landscape. As a vintage piece, the frame has some signs of age and previous use, which form part of its character.

Ready to hang and intended as a small, original piece of landscape art for a quiet corner, shelf or gallery wall.
