When does a rose stop being beautiful?

I found this solid oak frame with its own quiet history, and it seemed the right place for a faded rose.

The rose began as an observation of something beautiful at the point where its freshness was beginning to leave it — petals softening, colour changing, beauty becoming something different rather than simply disappearing. I wanted to leave that question open, rather than answer it.

The fine art print is printed by me onto art paper and mounted in a substantial vintage/pre-loved oak frame, with a few minor signs of wear that are part of its character. I have finished the piece by hand, adding the question “when does a rose stop being beautiful?” in pencil to the lower mount, with my name, Jane Maye, handwritten to the right.

Each element has its own history: the rose, the frame, and now the words that bring them together.
