vintage-walker-hall-sheffield-teapot-a-timeworn-vessel-with-a-past
Vintage Walker & Hall Sheffield Teapot – A Timeworn Vessel with a Past

Some objects become more interesting when their original purpose is no longer the only way we can imagine them.

This old Walker & Hall teapot caught my attention because of its wonderfully timeworn surface — darkened and softly marked by age, with the traces of its previous life left visible rather than polished away. Turn it over and the base carries the Walker & Hall Sheffield maker’s mark together with the number 11060, connecting this small object to one of Sheffield’s best-known historic metalware manufacturers.

I particularly like it filled with the last hydrangeas from the garden, when their summer colour has begun to fade into muted greens and pinks. Used this way, an object once made for the tea table becomes something quite different: a vessel for flowers, dried seed heads, feathers or other things gathered and kept.

The hinged lid opens, the handle has an unusual pierced detail, and the surface bears scratches, discolouration, rubbing and other signs of age and use. I have deliberately left its aged finish as I found it rather than polishing away the patina that gives it so much of its character.

The base is marked Walker & Hall, Sheffield, with the number 11060. I have not established the precise metal composition or date of manufacture, so it is being sold as a vintage decorative metal teapot rather than as silver, pewter or for food and drink use.

Please look carefully at all the photographs, which form part of the description.

For decorative use only. I think it would be particularly lovely used as a small flower vessel, displayed with old books and writing objects, or simply kept as an interesting piece of Sheffield history.

Flowers and moss shown in the photographs are for styling only and are not included.

Chosen for Moss & Maye because the things that have already lived one life can sometimes become even more interesting when we allow them another.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0995/3830/5406/files/83170A17-B93E-40DE-95EE-486C19473790.jpg?v=1790091045
